This is Skagway where the Klondike Gold Rush began in 1897. When The Seattle papers headlined "Gold in the Yukon!" 100,000 stampeders (as they were called) descended on the town. But as you can clearly see in this picture, there were mountains in the way. There were 2 passes-As one miner said, "It didn't matter which one you took, you'd still wish you had taken the other one". Both were long and difficult. Many died along the way, including the horses. In the White Pass, there is "dead horse gulch" where many perished. It was at this gulch were many horses were just too exhausted to continue. 3,000 died. One miner said he was convinced they were jumping off the cliff side on purpose. They probably were.
